On September 27, 2020, Azerbaijan opened an offensive against Armenian-held Nagorno-Karabakh with an inventory that looked, on paper, unremarkable for a Caucasus border war: tanks, towed guns, infantry. Forty-four days later, when the guns went quiet under a Russian-brokered ceasefire, the war had produced something rarer than a new border — a demonstration, filmed almost entirely from above, of what happens when a Soviet-legacy army meets an opponent who can see it, track it, and kill it from a machine with no pilot inside.
Armenia’s military was not unserious. It had T-72 tanks, self-propelled and towed artillery, and a layered Soviet-style air defense network — S-300 batteries, 2K12 Kub, 2K11 Krug, 9K33 Osa, 9K35 Strela-10 — built across decades to shoot down the fast, high-flying jets and helicopters those systems were designed for. What that network was not built for showed up in the first days of the war: slow, small, radar-quiet aircraft flying low and patient, in numbers, filming their own kills.
The hardware doing the killing
Azerbaijan’s edge came from two supply chains, not one. Turkey provided the Bayraktar TB2 — a mid-size armed drone, cheap by military-aircraft standards, that could loiter for hours and drop small guided bombs on anything its operator chose. Israel provided something stranger: loitering munitions like the IAI Harop, Orbiter, and SkyStriker — aircraft that are also the warhead, built to circle a suspected target area and dive into whatever radar signature or heat signature gives itself away. CSIS’s postwar analysis put it plainly: this combination “enabled Azerbaijani forces to find, fix, track, and kill targets… far beyond the front lines.” It wasn’t one wonder-weapon. It was persistence — a fleet that could watch a stretch of ground for hours until something worth killing moved under it.
That fleet didn’t appear overnight. SIPRI’s accounting of the arms trade shows Israel supplied roughly 27 percent of Azerbaijan’s major arms imports between 2011 and 2020 — a decade-long relationship, not a wartime rush order. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has separately claimed the country spent some $5 billion on Israeli military equipment by 2016 alone. Whatever the exact figure, the drones over Karabakh in 2020 were the visible tip of a procurement strategy years in the making.
Why the old air defense couldn’t see it coming
The mismatch was structural, not a failure of individual crews. Systems like the S-300 and Kub were designed to track fast jets and ballistic threats at altitude — their radar and interception logic simply weren’t tuned for something the size and speed of a hobbyist aircraft. CSIS’s analysis notes these systems “flew too high” — in relative terms — to reliably intercept the class of threat now flying under and around them. By multiple accounts, only Armenia’s handful of newer Tor-M2KM units — reportedly as few as half a dozen — represented a real counter-drone capability. Six units cannot watch an entire front.
Azerbaijan then made the mismatch worse on purpose. Its forces flew converted, unmanned Antonov An-2 biplanes — Soviet-era crop-duster-turned-target-drones — as bait, sending them toward Armenian positions to draw air-defense radars into switching on and firing. The moment a launcher revealed itself, it became the next target. It’s an old suppression-of-air-defense idea, executed with obsolete aircraft nobody would miss. Azerbaijan’s president claimed the tactic accounted for several S-300 transporter-erector-launchers destroyed early in the war — a claim Armenia disputes, and one that, like most single-source wartime numbers from either government, should be read as an assertion rather than a verified count.
Watching your own army die on video
What made this war different from previous ones wasn’t only the equipment — it was the fact that so much of the killing was filmed, and released. Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence published a stream of drone-strike footage throughout the 44 days: an artillery piece from directly overhead, a truck convoy caught mid-move, the reticle drifting slightly before the frame goes white. Independent researchers at the open-source project Oryx spent the war and its aftermath cataloguing these releases frame by frame, cross-referencing wreckage against known unit types to build a photograph-and-video-confirmed record of destroyed, damaged, abandoned, and captured equipment on both sides. It remains one of the most-cited datasets on the war precisely because of its discipline — Oryx counts only what can be seen, explicitly excludes loitering munitions, ATGMs, and MANPADS from its equipment tallies, and says plainly that the true toll is “undoubtedly higher than recorded here.” Treat any single precise number pulled from a secondhand summary of that record — and there are many circulating — with real skepticism; Oryx’s own published caveats are the most reliable thing about it.
What it cost
The war’s human toll was severe and, per Human Rights Watch, not confined to combatants. HRW documented Azerbaijani strikes using cluster munitions and unguided rockets against Stepanakert, killing at least 13 civilians and injuring 51 during the war; it separately found Armenian rocket attacks on Ganja and Barda — cities well outside the immediate conflict zone — used wide-area-effect weapons in ways HRW called indiscriminate and likely unlawful. A drone strike near the village of Sotq seriously wounded a 14-year-old boy and damaged two schools. Amnesty International verified 22 videos depicting apparent war crimes committed by both sides over the course of the war — twelve attributed to Armenian forces, ten to Azerbaijani forces — including footage, authenticated by Amnesty and independently reported by outlets including TIME and RFE/RL, of an Azerbaijani-uniformed individual decapitating an Armenian civilian while others looked on. Estimates gathered by conflict-tracking researchers put total deaths in the thousands on both sides, alongside more than 100,000 people displaced.
The ceasefire, signed November 9 and taking effect at midnight Moscow time, came after Azerbaijani forces captured the strategically vital town of Shusha — a battlefield fact that made the negotiating table, not just the drones circling above it, decisive in ending the war.
The lesson analysts took from it, and the one they overstated
Within a year, Nagorno-Karabakh had become required reading in defense-policy circles as a case study in what small, persistent, expendable aircraft can do to a force built around large, expensive, well-defended ones. CSIS and SIPRI’s assessments converge on a real and durable finding: Israeli loitering munitions and Turkish drones were “an important component of Azerbaijan’s military superiority” — not because any single weapon was unstoppable, but because Armenia’s air defense architecture, built for a different era’s threats, had no coherent answer to sustained low-and-slow aerial surveillance paired with precision strike.
What the war did not prove, despite how often it gets cited that way, is that tanks or artillery are obsolete, or that any army with enough drones can now win outright. Armenia’s specific air-defense mix — heavy on 1970s-and-80s Soviet systems, thin on modern short-range counter-drone units — was an unusually favorable target set. The lesson that survives careful scrutiny is narrower and more useful: air defense built only for yesterday’s fast movers is not air defense against today’s slow, cheap, numerous ones. Every military planner who watched that footage in 2020 understood exactly which shelf their own inventory was sitting on.
