The Premium Blind Spot

X's highest-value users have opted out of ads completely. The most direct and underrated fix is the most obvious partnership in platform commerce: Shopify and X.

X has about 4.4 million paid users. They are the heaviest users, the highest-trust audience, and the people with the most money to spend.

They generate zero advertising revenue. By design.

I have Premium+. I have never seen an ad on X.

The better Premium gets, the more of X’s best customers disappear from the ad business. The model is eating itself.

The Problem

X built a paid tier that hides its best customers from the only thing it sells.

Forcing ads on Premium users kills the reason they paid. Showing more ads to everyone else makes the free experience worse — and pushes more people into Premium. The platform has no answer for users who paid to be left alone.

This cannot be fixed inside the current model.

The Fix

X needs to partner with Shopify.

Not “advertise Shopify products” — partner. Make Shopify the native commerce layer of X.

Shopify has already built almost everything needed:

  • Live product catalogs that AI assistants can query in real time.
  • Checkout that works inside conversations, not just on storefronts.
  • An open commerce protocol, built with Google, for how AI agents buy things.

What Shopify does not have is distribution at the level of live public conversation. X does.

Every day, millions of people post commercial intent on X. “Need a recommendation for a good office chair.” “Anyone tried [tool] for [use case]?” “Looking for a [thing] under $X.” Right now, that signal dies in the timeline.

If X can surface real, buyable Shopify merchants at the moment of intent — with pricing, reviews, and a one-click path to purchase — three things happen at once.

  • Premium users finally become economically valuable. Not as ad targets. As buyers, at the exact moment they want something.
  • Brands get access to the highest-quality audience on the platform, only when those people are actually trying to spend.
  • X earns transaction revenue instead of fighting for impressions in a shrinking pool.

This is not selling ads to people who paid to avoid them. It is building a new surface where commerce happens because someone asked for it.

Why It Matters

X already owns the attention layer. Shopify already owns the merchant, product, and checkout layer. Stitching them together is the single highest-leverage move either company could make in the next two years.

Everything else is rearranging deck chairs on an ad model whose best customers have already left the room.

X needs Shopify. Shopify needs X.

This is the deal.
